Use of two biomarkers of renal ischemia to assess machine-perfused non-heart-beating donor kidneys.

aspect to take into consideration when choosing among reagents. Reconstituting a fresh vial of reagent daily dramatically increases costs when the majority of a previous vial is discarded. All reagents tested were relatively inexpensive, costing an average of US $3.00/mL (list price). In summary, all assays detected hypofibrinogenemia, although the BioMerieux reagent yielded slightly prolonged values for the normal sample on one day. All reagents were sensitive to heparin, although the BioData reagent was too sensitive, with a terminal clotting time at heparin concentrations 100 IU/L. Use of this reagent would make it difficult to monitor a patient receiving therapeutic amounts of heparin. In contrast, the BioMerieux, BioPool, and Sigma Diagnostics reagents produced measurable clotting times in the presence of therapeutic heparin. These latter two reagents have potential use in monitoring heparin therapy.

Use of non-heart-beating donors in renal transplantation.
The rate of renal transplantation has plateaued and is now limited by the number of donor organs available. In the past all donor kidneys came from living donors or controlled non-heart beating donors. It was not until the introduction of brainstem death criteria that cadaveric heart beating donors became the main source. Recently, there has been renewed interest in non-heart beating donors, wh...
متن کاملEffect of brain death and non-heart-beating kidney donation on renal function and injury: an assessment in the isolated perfused rat kidney.
OBJECTIVES Ischemic injury to the renal allograft prior to implantation is considered as the major cause of primary non and never-function (PNF) and delayed graft function (DGF). Evidence has been put forward that brain dead and non-heart-beating (NHB) donor organs are of marginal quality compared to living donors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate renal function and injury of brain dea...

BACKGROUND We present our experience of a controlled non-heart beating donation (CNHBD) programme in a University Hospital. METHODS Data from all referrals for CNHBD between January 2005 and January 2008 were collected prospectively. Donor and recipient data were analysed and compared to other cadaveric and HBD transplants performed during the same period. RESULTS During the period, 79 dono...

Renal transplantation is the ideal renal replacement therapy for treatment of end stage kidney failure but its limitation is the constant shortage of cadaveric donors. While the traditional source of cadaveric kidneys is procurement from heart-beating donors, organ procurement from non-heart-beating donors (NHBD) would help in coping with the rising demand for organs. However various important ...

INTRODUCTION The goal of the Eurotransplant renal allocation scheme is to provide every patient on the waiting list with a reasonably balanced opportunity for a donor offer. New initiatives were taken in order to maximize donor usage while maintaining a successful transplant outcome. METHODS Two Eurotransplant projects were launched in order to accommodate changes in donor and recipient profi...
